Gentle Pet Dental Care with Oral Exams, Digital X-rays, Dog & Cat Teeth Cleaning
A healthy, happy pet is free of conditions and diseases that cause pain and shorten life. Carriage Hills Animal Hospital offers a personalized wellness program for every pet that includes regular dental exams, to prevent disease and maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Pet Dental Care Prevents Disease
Dental disease is one of the most common problems seen in our animal companions. Periodontal disease can lead to bad breath, certainly, but also causes dental infections and damage to major organs such as the heart and kidneys.
Our pets eat a processed diet, often enjoying people food and treats that jeopardize the health of their teeth and gums. Regular dental exams provide an early warning system for developing issues and an opportunity to address them before they impact your pet’s overall health.
Advanced dental care is available at our hospital, including extractions, root canals, and other minor endodontic procedures. As with any potentially painful procedure, local anesthetics and post-operative pain medications are used as needed.
Dog & Cat Teeth Cleaning
Regular professional cleaning is important to caring for your pet’s teeth. Teeth cleaning and a thorough exam often including dental radiology are performed under anesthesia for the safety and comfort of your pet.
We use a safe ultrasonic cleaner to clean each tooth thoroughly, above and below the gum line. Our veterinary technicians polish the teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.
Digital dental X-rays provide detailed images of your pet’s mouth. These high-resolution images allow us to better assess the health and integrity of each tooth.

Home Dental Care for Pets

Brushing your pet’s teeth takes a bit of patience at first, but most pets learn to cooperate very quickly, and even enjoy the process. For reference, you may wish to print out this AAHA teeth brushing guide.
AAHA Dental Care Guidelines for Dogs & Cats
The American Animal Hospital Association Dental Care Guidelines recommend regular oral exams and dental cleanings, under general anesthesia, for all adult dogs and cats, including the following:
- Pre-anesthetic exam—May include blood tests, urine test, ECG, and X-rays
- Anesthesia monitoring—Careful watch over vital signs for safety
- Dental radiographs—For accurate evaluation
- Scaling and polishing—To remove plaque and calculus
- Fluoride and sealants—Can strengthen teeth and slow development of plaque
AAHA recommends these procedures at least annually, starting at one year of age. Contact us to schedule your pet’s appointment today.
