Montgomery AL Veterinary Endoscopy: Less Invasive Diagnostic & Surgical Technology for Pets

Veterinary Endoscopy

Carriage Hills Animal Hospital offers the advanced diagnostic and surgical technology of endoscopy for our current patients and veterinary referrals. Endoscopy is a minimally invasive technology, useful for the examination, biopsy, and treatment of conditions such as cancer, foreign objects, and inflammatory diseases.

How Veterinary Endoscopy Works

High-tech flexible fiber optics permit direct visual examination and biopsies of your pet’s gastrointestinal system. This allows for more accurate diagnosis and treatment of oral, esophageal, stomach, colon, and even upper intestinal tract disease. Foreign objects can also be removed without the need for surgery in many cases.

The veterinarian inserts a long, flexible tube into the body, typically through existing orifices. The tip of the tube contains a video chip and a strobe light used to capture images and sends them to a video monitor.

Uses for Endoscopy in Pets

The use of an endoscope by a trained veterinarian allows us to retrieve foreign objects without the need for more invasive surgery. Endoscopic procedures regularly performed in our hospital include:

  • GI procedures, such as colonoscopy and gastroscopy, are used to diagnose cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Respiratory system procedures, such as bronchoscopy and rhinoscopy, are used to identify cancers, foreign bodies, and inflammatory diseases.
