Many of us have a favorite breed that either reminds us of an early childhood best friend or that has a particular look we like. Purebred pets often come with high price tags, though, and questionable breeding practices. Meanwhile, millions of animals are euthanized each year because not enough people consider the meaningful decision of adopting.

The reality is, cats and dogs end up in shelters through no fault of their own. A neglect to spay or neuter can result in too many pets, or pets with easily-modified behavioral issues are dropped off when the family doesn’t want to work through it.
